Citrus Boost

Pomelo, Basel, Switzerland

I was perusing the isles of the new Aldi in Allschwil the other day when I came across this beautiful fruit that was reminiscent of a really big lime. Its green color was so intense and cheery I decided I just had to give it a try.

Unsure of exactly what it was but guessing it belonged to the grapefruit family, I did some online research upon arriving home and concluded that it was a pomelo—and not a green grapefruit, which I now know are not one in the same. My pomelo was firm to the touch and quite heavy (maybe a few pounds or one kilo?) with very thick skin. It had pink flesh, which apparently is rare when compared with its common cousin the white fleshed pomelo. The little juice vesicles, or jewels, were strong and remained intact until they were in my mouth—a characteristic I appreciate from any given fruit. :)

And finally, the taste. It was de-licious! Not as sweet as an orange and lacking the sourness of a grapefruit. I recommend you enjoy one today. Perhaps they are not only at Aldi and can be found at Migros or Coop?

Hi there, nice to find a blog from Basel. The citrus boost you have seems to be pomelo pink they called here. I came across in Migros and now in COOP too. I have a food and travel blog too and have posted 2 recipes using pomelo if you are interested too: one is Thai pomelo salad and the other is Mango pomelo sago dessert. It is a gem for me when I found them : ) I learnt about your blog from AWC : )
